Mystery Inner Gorge Landsliding

In basins in northern California, there are cases of widespread and relatively continuous along channel inner gorge landsliding (see photos below). The streamside landsliding appears to be unrelated to land use activities and is occurring in areas of dense forest as well as prairie. Has anyone seen anything similar in other landscapes or know of any literature that addresses the mechanism of along channel inner gorge failures that might be driven by channel processes? Thanks.
